Written by Dr. Rachita Narsaria, M.D. | Sometimes our hair just won’t cooperate, no matter what we do and how hard we try. To add to the chaos, high temperature, humidity, salt water, and chlorinated pools are all summer “perks” that can very well rob our hair of its natural bounce and shine. Before you panic, listen to these words: Keep calm and follow these seven carefully thought-out remedies for a bad hair day.

1. For Frizzy Hair

Put frizzy hair in its place by with some leave-in deep conditioner. Avoid running your fingers through repeatedly as this just builds up the frizz. Also, after you’ve finished combing your hair, twist up all the strands and let them go. This will tame the frizz instantly!

Pro tip: If you run out of leave-in conditioner, try using a hand cream instead. Just be careful not to use too much, as it can get greasy very easily.

2. For Greasy Hair

Contrary to popular belief, washing oily hair repeatedly can actually lead to a depletion of natural oils and a production of more oils to compensate. This process makes your hair greasier than it was before. You’re better off using the right shampoo and conditioner; just make sure to not overuse. A twice to thrice weekly wash is often enough to keep the locks manageable.

3. For Fringes and Flyaways

Rub in a few drops of good hair serum before you blow dry. This will keep the flyaways exactly where you want them to be (i.e., not visible). Fringes tend to get greasy faster than the rest of the scalp for some. If this is the case for you, tie up your hair in a ponytail and wash only the fringe with a pea-sized amount of shampoo.

4. For The Days You Want to Accessorize

Use a bold printed headband, a barrette, a classy hat or cute hair pins to add to your overall look what your hair is taking away from it. Pull long hair into a pony tail and add a chic broach. Whether you opt for classy, confident, or cute, there’s an accessory for that.

5. For the Natural Look

Get a good haircut and let wavy hair be wavy, straight hair be straight. This just makes everyday hair care much easier, don’t you think? Avoid styling products that are high in alcohol content, such as gels and sprays. Many alcohols make hair more brittle.

6. For Split Ends

Be sure to get regular trims to keep split ends at bay. Have a healthy diet rich in nuts, beans, green leafy vegetables, and milk products to give your hair the nutrition it needs.

Pro tip: If you absolutely must trim a few split ends yourself, do it the right way! Twist a lock of hair (about 0.75 to 1 inch in diameter) until you see a few strands pop out. Trim off any visible split ends with a good pair of scissors.

7. For the Last Resort Boost

Lastly, if none of the above options work, opt for a good quality hair styling gel/ mousse to hold back the curl/ wave. Straight hair tends to be limp, so a volume boosting mousse can do the trick instantly. Mousse is also great for taming a mane full of rebellious, uncontrollable hair.
