Hybrid at heart, Exocet was founded by two young designers from Beirut & Hong Kong. Born of the idea of merging fashion & technology, the brand mixes traditional leather savoir-faire with cutting edge 3D printing technology, creating innovation yet out of time pieces. As a brand in constant evolution, Exocet will soon offer menswear pieces, ready-to-wear and even representing artists to enforce their hybrid label.
MORNING LAU-EXOCET PARIS / Paris
Jule Magazine: How did EXOCET PARIS come alive?
Morning: Yasmine and I met when we came to study in Paris, we both felt very deep for the city and we stayed to claim our dreams after we graduated from master at Esmod Paris. In fact we both were studying womenswear, tho we wanted to start the brand with creating something that is a bit crazy yet still suitable for everyday wear. You might wear a special piece of clothing once or twice, yet a special bag could accompany everyday.
What is the one word that describes EXOCET PARIS?
M: Hybrid would be the word best describes us. From our brand name Exocet, which means a flying fish in French; the origins of us founders, Hong Kong and Lebanon; mixing technology and fashion; and last but not less our 3D hybrid animals.
Who inspires you to become a designer?
M: Since both my parents are in the industry since I was young, I guess that was the main influence for me wanting to be a designer. Iris Van Herpen would be whom I admire a lot.
What makes up a perfect handbag?
M: The quality of the leather would be the main factor I would say.
What kind of looks pair best with EXOCET PARIS bags?
M: Since an Exocet Paris bag also acts as an accessory to your daily look, it can go perfectly with any casual look, it as well compliments anything extravagant.
Where do you find inspirations?
M: We basically get inspired by everything around us; nature, technology, ancient or modern art, etc. As far as these elements exist, we should be good.
When is your “moment of glory” as a chief designer?
M: When people already know the brand before we present ourselves.
What are the obstacles that you have encountered throughout your design career? How did you overcome them?
M: To merge 3D printing into leather goods which we could use daily, was not easy to accomplished at the beginning. We face the risk of which the market might find it too new to accept yet, the fragility, and as well to find the harmony between fashion and technology. Yet after numerous of attempts and fails, we are slowly finding our style and our place in the market.
Upcoming directions and news:
M: For FW1516, menswear line and new animal faces will be expected.
