One of the biggest reasons why we love watching movies is because it allows us for a few hours to experience themselves as part of another dimension, another life and as another person. Movies let us understand aspects of our daily life in a more cohesive way that inspires us to change and reflect on the very purpose of our being what we are. Every once in a while there comes a movie that make us think and here are 5 of those innumerable films that shape culture globally.

The Great Dictator (1940)

Charlie Chaplin’s ingenuity in acting and film-making brilliance is very well showcased through one of his masterpieces “The Great Dictator”. The story is a retelling of the second Great War with a more positive outcome and a lot of wishful thinking. But it very well depicts the aspirations of the common man who would to like end the concept of wars for good. Charlie’s humorous ways made this movie a depiction of the war and its end with great hopes and with the intention to keep the masses laughing at a time of great grief. The film’s greatest impact comes from a speech given by Chaplin’s character, being dubbed as The Greatest Speech Ever Made, which is as relevant as it was 75 years ago.

Network (1976)

This perfectly outrageous motion picture is a criticism of television networks’ hollow sensationalism that makes up 95% of all media being telecasted all around the world. Director Sidney Lumet brings out the inner workings of a television network that until the 70’s was barely known by the average American. The film depicts how the media does what it does for mere ratings that decide what’s popular for good or for worse. 10 Academy Award nominations and 4 wins, one includes the first of its kind Best Actor for Peter Finch, posthumously, for his most memorable performance as a news presenter and journalist, His “I’m mad as hell!” speech tells everything vial that existed then and does to this day. The film inspires you to not be impressed by this hollow sensationalism and to rightly reason with all that exists in the world today.

The Dark Knight (2008)

One of Christopher Nolan’s most cherished works, The Dark Knight is a sequel in a three-part trilogy one of the world’s favorite superheroes, The Batman. The film depicts Batman’s strive to make his beloved city understand the obstacles it has to overcome before preparing to become an exemplary public system, by going against his arch-enemy, The Joker. The film creates the most successful superhero, played by Christian Bale, which made it to the big screen with the greatest villain, Heath Ledger, to whom the film is dedicated to. It’s being said that ledger was so engrossed into the character that it is being considered as one of the reasons for his early death. The film has some of the most reflective dialogues for modern society and has managed to inspire millions to be heroes in their own right and face adversity by standing their ground, unmatched and unaltered by the losses that they will endure on the way.

Warrior (2011)

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) has seldom been a theme for sports movies and Warrior is one of the greatest MMA films ever made. The film, inspired by a true story, has made it to one of Tom Hardy and veteran Nick Nolte’s top 5 best performances. It is about a struggle that ties a family together, no matter they are worlds apart from their individual ways of life. The film consists of sympathetic and believable characters that people can relate to. Some of the most terrific fight sequences in Hollywood history, the film pits blood against blood and inspires the viewers to understand that if there’s one thing in the world worth fighting really hard for, it’s family.

Its junior stars make for some of the most memorable acts in modern films that have the ability to melt the brawniest heart. It inspires the woman of the modern age to through hell if they have to safeguard her loved ones.
