Angela Merkel, Germany

Germany’s Chancellor has faced many challenges since she took office in 2005 — principally the near complete financial meltdown of the European Union. Merkel is not only the most important female politician in Europe, but arguably the most important among both genders. She has taken a central role in resolving the biggest problems facing Europe today and has made Germany the most important player in bailing out struggling EU countries such as Greece. This role has led to her to being described as the EU’s de-facto leader and “the world’s second most powerful person” according to Forbes. This recognition has of course come with its price; in this case other European countries feeling threatened by the role Merkel and her country are taking. Her capability and importance as a leader, however, cannot be denied.
