Written by JD Gonzales | People are everywhere. Just about everything in life revolves around people and your relationships with people. It’s important to realize and understand that without properly connecting with people, you won’t get very far. Yes, you might be able to score a cool position at a great company, but you won’t have a good base of people to help keep you in that position or support you when things don’t quite go your way. It’s also important to understand that people realize when you’re not being genuine with them on a subconscious level. If you are incapable of genuinely caring about people, then just stop reading. This world was made for people to be loving and caring to each other in order to build and thrive the best possible communities. Therefore, this entire article is to get a single point across: care about the people you’re around; your peers, mentors, and those below you. How to do this is the tricky in part because it’s a slow process. You can’t by any means rush a relationship, and once you actually get to a place of actual caring, it develops organically on its own. There are a few practical steps one can take to ensure that they are putting their best foot forward in dealing with relationships. I was lucky that my parents taught me some of these things when I was a child and I can’t thank them enough.

The first tip is to look someone in the eye and shake their hand whenever you meet them. This shows respect to the person and allows them to feel interested. Upon meeting someone, don’t be constantly looking for opportunities to talk about yourself. Train yourself to ask questions and listen. People naturally love to talk about themselves and it can make it easy for you to connect and be relevant to them when you don’t talk about yourself. You’ll also be able to gauge how you’re able to connect with the person. When I was working at a music school, I met a lot of producers and musicians. I made sure to connect with them not only so I could have connections in the future, but also because I genuinely thought they were great people. Be humble. Understand that you’re not the greatest thing to walk in the room and that people want to relate to you. I can’t start talking about taking drum lessons in Frisco, Tx while the other person is focused on talking about art. Be engaging. People matter; take that principle into your business and you will go very far. connecting connecting
