how to motivate yourself to workout

Written by Natasha Cornall | We all know that we should be getting a regular amount of exercise, and we all know that it’s essential for maintaining our health, but it’s still difficult. After a long day sitting down in front of a computer we often go home and sit down in front of another screen or two instead of going for a walk outside, playing a sport with some friends, or heading to the gym. The only way we can manage to exercise regularly and consistently is by staying motivated, so we’ve come up with some simple and easy ways to develop the right mindset about exercising again.

1. Start small

When embarking on new ‘get fit’ regimes, many people suddenly decide that they will exercise for a set amount of time every single day, but it’s easy to lose motivation when you try to do too much too soon. Instead of setting a goal of working out every day, try doing it just once or twice a week. Starting small with something you will definitely be able to stick to will build up your confidence and make you more likely to continue.

2. Create a schedule

Write down a set time for your exercise routine in your diary or calendar, just like you would with any other appointment. You’ll find it more difficult to make excuses and procrastinate when you see your goals written down. Many people say they don’t have enough time to exercise, but you need to find time by making it a part of your weekly schedule. Perhaps you could exercise while doing something else! Jump on the exercise bike and pedal as you watch your favourite television program, for example.

3. Make it fun

Like everything in life, we’re far more likely to stick to exercising regularly if we enjoy it. Some people like going to the gym because it gives them structure and focus, but other people find it a chore. If you find the gym boring, why not take part in an exercise class, join a sports team, or go jogging with friends? Challenges like the Couch to 5k are another fun way to keep motivated. Whatever you do, make sure it’s something you enjoy doing and will be able to get into straight away.

4. Do it with a friend

It’s much easier to have fun if you’re exercising with a friend (they can help keep you motivated, too). Sometimes just the thought of a friend being able to run faster than you can spur you on to improve your own fitness! It could be something as simple as joining your neighbour when they go to walk their dog, or going ice skating or swimming with a group of friends instead of sitting in a pub or coffee shop. The communal aspect of the activity will make it fun, rather than burdensome.

5. Find a personal goal

You’ll find it difficult to keep exercising if you feel like you’re not getting anything out of it. Before you embark on your new fitness routine, think about why you’re doing it: do you want to lose weight, strengthen your muscles, or improve your overall health? Whatever your personal goal is, being able to track the results and see the improvements will make you want to continue. Additional smaller things such as feeling calmer and less stressed after a yoga class, or feeling more energized after a morning run, will keep you going once you’ve reached your original goal. You’ll also get to a point where being fit feels so great, that you simply can’t not work out!
