We should wake up every day
striving to create something new,
or else we should give up on making art.

Jule Magazine: Why do you specialize in textile, material and surface design?

Andrea Mandrescu: I love to experiment with materials and textures and find new combinations that can be applied in textiles in fashion and interior design.

Who inspires you to become a textile designer?
For me, becoming a textile designer is more of a transition. I have studied fine arts before and did my Master in Textile Futures at Central Saint Martin in London. I want to utilize my knowledge in the arts and textile to a field of design. Textile and material research are the ones that interested me the most.

You offer “Bespoke Design Services”. Tell us about the services.
Bespoke design service allows any designers to create their own design fantasies with the techniques I am using. Any two dimensional design idea/sketch can become a three dimensional material exploration on a variety of textile surfaces.

What is your vision on the future of fashion industry?
Continuous innovation (I hope!).

Where do you find inspirations?
In nature, architecture, interior design as well as textiles trends and material reviews.

When is your “moment of glory” as a chief designer?
When I was accepted to exhibit one of my works at Victoria and Albert Museum soon after my graduation. It was an amazing feeling and I was honoured to be there even for a short while.

What are the obstacles that you have encountered throughout your design career? How did you overcome them?
The business part, meaning, marketing and advertising! I am working hard on that aspect.

What is your favourite part of your design process?
My favorite part of the work is sampling and material research. Once I find something interesting and new, I will create an initial piece of textile design. It then becomes even more interesting, and unique in its own right.
